Mongol Rally
Always keen to join in with a serious spirit of adventure, Shane Rhodes of Bespoke Touring and his son, Ruari will be joining the Mongol Rally. The objective of the Mongol Rally is to drive from Hyde Park to Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, in a car thoroughly unsuitable for the task, having a great adventure and raising plenty of money for charity in the process. The thoroughly unsuitable vehicle in question is a 1289cc Skoda Felicia - the last of the truely crude, basic, rattly old Skodas. For those of you who say "But it's just a Volkswagen!", bear in mind that this is the same engine and chassis as the 1987 Favorit - the only part shared with a VW seems to be the steering wheel! This masterpiece of Eastern European engineering will convey Shane and Ruari to Mongolia by a route of up to 10,000 miles, the vast majority of which will be off road.
After reading this page (and hopefully using the form below to make a donation to our charities and/or our operational costs (the two will be kept entirely seperate), please visit our official Mongol Rally page by following this link, where you can find further information on our preparations, a picture gallery and our 'blog'.
The team are currently raising money in sponsorship for two charities: Christina Noble's Childrens' Foundation and Great Ormond Street Hospital. The first £1,000 raised will go to CNCF, as an official charity of the Mongol Rally, and any money raised above and beyond this limit will go to GOSH.
Christina Noble formed her foundation for the children of Vietman originally, expanding into Mongolia soon afterwards. Mongolia has a large problem with street orphans in Ulan Bator, who live in the sewers and heating systems as the only refuge available to them from the bitter cold of the Mongolian nights. CNCF provides safe housing, healthcare and education for homeless children, as well as emergency accommodation for families with children at risk of becoming homeless. The foundation also provides healthcare and education in rural areas, as well as rehabilitation programs for child prisoners, many of whom commit crime simply for a roof over their heads in prison.
Great Ormond Street Hospital is well known to many throughout the country for its outstanding work providing specialist healthcare for seriously ill children, and support for their families from counselling to accommodation near the hospital. Much of their work would be impossible without charitable donations: it takes £50,000,000 per year to run the hospital. Donated money helps with running all aspects of the hospital, from research into childhood diseases to providing support for patients and their families.
Team 'Generation Game' have set themselves very ambitious targets in terms of sponsorship - their chosen charities deserve nothing less. Please use the form below to donate generously.
In addition to the charitable fund raising, it costs a substantial amount to join in a rally such as this. From buying the car to funding the fuel and maintenance costs over such a great distance, the costs add up. We are looking for commercial sponsors to assist us with the costs involved in partaking in this trip. The commercial oppurtunities are substantial, we aim to get as much media coverage as possible in the run up to the rally, and can offer to display your logo on the vehicle itself. No funds raised for charity will be used for operations, and any money remaining after the operational costs are accounted for will be donated to the charities mentioned above.
Thank you for your support,
Shane and Ruari Rhodes
